Chennai is currently hosting the World Hypertension Congress 2025 from March 7-9, marking the first time this prestigious global event is being held in India. Organized by the World Hypertension League (WHL) at the Chennai Trade Centre, the congress has brought together 40 international and 250 national speakers, with over 1,700 delegates in attendance.
With 32% of India’s population affected by hypertension, the congress is providing healthcare professionals—including physicians, specialists, and researchers—an opportunity to enhance their knowledge on hypertension detection, evaluation, and treatment. Key discussions focus on early screening, lifestyle modifications, and combination risk factors like obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
The event is also highlighting salt reduction as a key preventive measure. Experts stress that India’s average salt intake of more than 8g per day exceeds the WHO’s recommended 5g daily limit, significantly contributing to high blood pressure.
“Reducing salt intake is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to control hypertension. Excess salt consumption directly increases blood pressure, raising the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure. Public awareness and lifestyle modifications can go a long way in preventing these life-threatening complications,” said Dr. S.N. Narasingan, MD, Vice President, World Hypertension League, Chair, Indian Organizing Committee – World Hypertension Congress 2025, and Managing Director, SNN Specialties Clinic, Chennai.
Under the theme “Controlling Hypertension Together and Reducing Cardiovascular Burden,” the congress is featuring extensive discussions, evidence-based guidelines, and global strategies to combat hypertension effectively.
